We
are so pleased to share with you Sandra Surber's Hackneys! Her explanation
about her ponies is so great, we'll have her do the talking;
"This (on the left) is Hackney Pony, Heartland Candidate.
The photo was taken at our first show in Sept. '98 at Eugene, Oregon.
(Below) is a photo of my Road Pony, Mastercraft's Gambler LF. I have to explain that in this photo my hat is on backwards, 'cause I promised the kids
who show from the same barn that if Gambler and I won the Championship at the last show of the season I would do that for them for the victory lap. Luckily no one called the "hat police".
He is about to be 5 yrs old. I purchased him in
1998 from Dr. Raun in Iowa. He's my first Road Pony so it has been quite a learning experience for both of us.
I went to Dr. Raun's specifically to try out this pony. My trainer, Bruce Dixon, met me there.
When I was just looking around the barn at Doc's, I saw this fabulous looking cob-tail in one of the stalls.
He turned out to be Heartland Candidate, an 8 year old gelding.
I went ahead and tried out the Gambler, but couldn't stop talking about the cob-tail.
The next day Doc hitched him up for me and I was just blown away. We made the deal for the Roadster (included trading in my Pleasure Pony) & we went home.
Just couldn't resist calling back and making a deal for Candidate, also. Both ponies have been so much fun to show.
I never thought that I would enjoy the "breed" thing, but it has been a blast.
Hackneys are just wonderful...so smart, so exciting. We also have 4 Friesians but that's another story."
Our show record for 1999
Heartland Candidate - 6 Hackney Grand Championships
5th place in Amateur Stakes at World Championship
Mastercraft's Gambler LF - 4 - Road Pony Grand Championships
3- Road Pony Reserve Grand Championships
Pretty darned good for our first year together! That's why I'm so proud."
